Vang Nen Ren Nay
This project explores the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through a fusion of Quan Ho folk music and Dong Ho traditional painting. Quan Ho, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, originates from Bac Ninh Province and dates back to the 13th century. Traditionally performed in rituals and festivals, Quan Ho is a unique form of Vietnamese folk music known for its intricate vocal techniques, including Vang, Nen, Ren, and Nay-echo control, stability, flexibility, and vocal bounce. As these techniques form the essence of Quan Ho, they were used as the textual foundation for this design experiment. Inspired by Dong Ho woodcut paintings, which also depict elements of Vietnamese cultural and social life, this project visually merges both art forms. The paintings, originating from the same region as Quan Ho, often portray folklore, spiritual figures, and everyday life, making them the perfect visual complement to celebrate Vietnamese tradition.
